From humble beginnings to global recognition, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has come a long way since its inception in 1959. Rourkela Steel Plant Authority is located in the city of Rourkela, Odisha, India, in the Sundargarh District of Odisha. It is approximately 340km northwest of Bhubaneswar, the state capital, and has acquired 19,000 acres of land from tribal inhabitants. The plant lies close to the heart of the eastern ghats, near the confluence of the Koel and Sankha rivers.
RSP is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Rourkela steel plant is one of India’s largest steel plants, with a production capacity of over 4.5 million tonnes of steel per year with ₹ 26,830.57 crore revenue in the year (2022-2023).
As a cornerstone of the local economy, RSP has been driving growth and progress in Rourkela Odisha and its neighboring states for decades. The plant has played a significant role in the region’s development, driving growth and infrastructure development. SAIL produces a wide range of steel products like Hot Rolled coils, plates, sheets, structured steel, rails, wheels and axles, forgings, tubes, pig iron, semi-finished products, etc.
RSP provides direct and indirect employment to thousands of people. In the years (2022-2023) approximately 19,034 people were appointed as workers in this plant. This provides various benefits to its employees, such as soft skill training, professional degree assistance, office perks, child care facilities, shuttle, office gym, health & insurance, etc.
RSP received the “Gold award “for its internal communication campaign, and a few departments were certified with the prestigious ISO 50001:2018 energy management system for the first time.
